Hairdressing tools: our tips for maintaining them

You take care of your hair and you pay particular attention to the products you select. Why not do the same with your hair tools and accessories? You use your combs or brushes every day and yet sometimes they can get very dirty. Between hair, dead skin, sebum, leftover hair products and dust, as much to tell you that it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Like any cosmetic accessory in contact with your skin, it is important to take the time to clean them properly to maintain a healthy scalp and beautiful hair, but also to preserve their original characteristics and extend their lifespan, particularly for accessories made of natural fibers (wood, natural hair, horn) and handmade. The Bradörf & Origa stylists share their tips for quality maintenance.

Clean your hairbrush weekly

No matter what type of brushes you have, we recommend that you take the time to clean them weekly with a quick dry cleaning. This technique is also effective for cleaning a boar bristle hairbrush.

• Start by removing the hair stuck in your brush using a mini-rake (cleaner) provided for this purpose. You can also use a comb to remove the hair, for bristle brushes make sure you use a comb with wide enough teeth.

• To remove all traces of oil or other matter, wipe the quills individually with a cloth.

How to deep clean your hairbrush

  • Dry cleaning does not replace a monthly tool bath.
  • Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and add a little shampoo (or white vinegar). Insert the coarse bristles down, making sure no water gets on the wood.
  • Make sure hairbrushes are NEVER submerged in water.
  • Gently agitate the bristles to remove any oil or other material.
  • Remove brush and shake off excess water. Place the brush with the bristles pointing down on a flat surface. Let the bristles dry naturally and completely.
  • Please do not place on a heat source or in direct sunlight.

Don't neglect the combs

• Clean with a cloth.

• To remove oil or other deposits, fill a cup with warm water and add a little shampoo (or white vinegar) use a soft toothbrush to gently brush each tooth.

• Leave to dry in a dark, cool place.

Proper maintenance of your styling tools

To prolong the proper functioning and life of your tools, here are some habits to adopt. We advise you to check and clean your tools each time you use them.

For heated tools (flat and round irons)

Flat irons are a great tool to use for straightening your hair and round irons are ideal for creating perfect curls but eventually hair products and oils build up on the plates of your tools will significantly hamper the efficiency and to the quality of your hairstyles.

  • Switch on your tool and set it to the lowest temperature for a few minutes. The heat will help clean any buildup that may be on your heat tools.
  • Unplug your iron and turn it off. Allow your tool to cool on a heat resistant mat or hand towel for approximately 5 minutes after turning it off and unplugging it from the outlet.
  • While your flat iron is still cooling, gauge the heat 1 inch away from the plates if it has cooled enough to be touched safely. Just use a cloth and warm water or a professional cleaning solution.

For the rest of the tool, clean it with alcohol and a cotton ball. First, make sure the flat iron is completely cool. After that, lightly dampen a clean cloth with water and wipe your iron again.

      For hair dryers

It is essential to periodically clean your hair dryer. Improper maintenance will significantly decrease power. More importantly, it could cause the device to overheat and become a potential fire hazard!

      • Unplug your appliance and let it cool down.
      • Rotate the protection on the back of your hair dryer.
      • Remove and/or clean the filter of excess hair and dust using a soft, dry brush, or use your vacuum cleaner.

Some hair dryers come with a handy removable filter. If the filter is attached to your dryer, use a toothbrush to gently loosen the dirt.

Keep your electrical accessories in a closed place, such as a drawer, to prevent them from accumulating dust. Also, it is essential not to neglect the electric wires by avoiding any twists or bad manipulations which could break and risk a short circuit or quite simply impair use.
